• My Darling Dreadful Thing | 2024 | Johanna van Veen - My God. I finished this book at 3AM last night, and I can’t recall the last time a book compelled so. I am still processing much of this book and will post the full review when I’m ready, but I can wholeheartedly recommend it at this time. The writing style propels you forward, the balance of Gothic horror tropes and new diversions of time, place, and quirk are well-balanced indeed, and it is unfortunately deeply, deeply soul-crushing in the most sapphic of ways. More than anything, this book uses Gothic horror as its shell to bring very novel (haha) ways to bring you closer to the characters and succeeds. I just wish one of the tropes she didn’t bring in was the brutal ending.
